First Writing Job Post-Uni - PANIC.

When I was a child I yearned to be an actress; stage, screen – you name it. And after much performance training and long ballet classes, as well as GCSE’s and a BTEC in Performing Arts I decided I wasn’t as competitive as the profession needed me to be (however, I do still belt out the Musical Theatre classics in the shower).  Acting and musicals were my childhood; my grandma and I used to spend Saturdays (and her pension) visiting West End Musicals and I still have a giant box of programs collected over the years. My adolescence was spent performing in college shows and enjoying Amateur Dramatics with Second To None Theatre Company, based in Kent, but when I came to University that all changed.

At Winchester University, I never took a dance class, I never joined the Performing Arts society – I started writing, editing and writing and editing, and writing and editing. It’s only now that I’ve realised, post-degree, that the writing-world is very similar to that of the acting/performance world. Everyone thinks they can do it, very few can. I am still yet to know if I can do the writing thing. However, I did take on my first freelance job last week. Not something I’d planned to do, but enjoyable and beneficial nonetheless.

A friend, Simon, runs a Television Studio company and he’s putting on an event in Boston this September. His PA is currently on holiday, and his ‘people’ surprised him by asking for their Health & Safety document, complete with schedule and risk assessment, three weeks too early. This is where I came in, Simon is a friend of a friend, and our mutual friend Cassi suggested me to help him out.

With no previous Health & Safety knowledge, I was incredibly dubious and nervous to even agree to help – I just didn’t want to let either Cassi or Simon down. However, I turned up eager and ready to work. A semi-stressful day and a half later and the work was finished and I was really happy with the work I’d put into the document.

Even though Health & Safety isn’t something that I want to do, and it’s not as ‘creative’ as I’d like to be writing, I am eternally grateful for the experience (and the pay, believe me!).  I am also so glad that there were people around who thought that I could do it, even when I thought I couldn’t.  Who am I to be writing about Health & Safety? I am perpetually smashing things and I’m always peppered by black and blue bruises. A bull in a china shop comes to mind, actually. A bull in a china shop, whilst copywriting.

So, although it’s not my writing-world ‘big-break’ it’s certainly a step in the right direction. It’s inspired me to get on with my own stuff; to blog more regularly, to read more, to learn more – all so I have more to offer, more knowledge, more opinions and more practise under my belt. If something is true of both acting and writing worlds it’s that if you have a spare moment; practise. Practise doesn’t always make perfect, but it makes better than the time before. That’s pretty much all I can offer at this stage in the game, that I am better at life than I was yesterday, and here’s hoping that that’s good enough.

I’ve copied in some useful websites and things that keep me inspired and interested just because I know how shit it is to be ‘stuck’.

Ideas Tap is a completely free website that lists job opportunities, information and inspirational videos and articles to keep things fresh in your mind.

You The Designer is an awesome, slightly more visual, creative inspiration space that provides ideas on typography, graphic design as well as downloadable freebies.

And last, for today, Pinterest. Be it with interior design, quotes, fashion or recipes this website is awash with bright ideas and creative inspirations that keep me awake for hours when I really should be sleeping.

Birthday in Brighton: Mexican Street Food at La Choza.

Good evening and welcome back. It was my birthday recently so my boyfriend surprised me with a day-trip to Brighton. Let me tell you how amazing this Mexican place we found was... Warning: FOOD PORN.

La Choza; the best Mexican street food I’ve ever tasted.

After wandering around the beautiful Lanes in the birthday-Brighton sunshine, my boyfriend and I were both starved and steering away from chain store food, we favoured something a little more independent, a little more unique; a little more Brighton.

Open until 10pm everyday, we found La Choza and it’s cute outside tables on Gloucester Street; a little way from the Lanes but definitely worth the walk. James immediately ordered a beer on recommendation from our waitress who turned out to be the business owner and eventually, in high spirits, I went with a Passion Fruit Slushie. If you can’t have a Slushie drink on your 21st birthday, then when can you?

After scanning the menu, I knew what I wanted. A homemade chorizo and melted cheese quesadilla. As soon as I read it, I knew it was what I had been craving all day. James went with a more filling burrito with spicy pork and salsa.
Although I have been to Brighton before, this was the first trip that I truly got to walk around and take everything in; James favourite record shop opposite Snooper’s Paradise on the North Lanes, the amazing street art and graffiti on the sides of all the buildings, my favourite being this Alice In Wonderland inspired piece –

La Choza was the perfect addition to the day in Brighton, the staff were friendly and happy – the decor was completely to my taste and full of beautiful Dia De Los Meurtos skulls and the walls were papered with colouring in sheets finished by child customers.
By the time our food came we were ravenous – not because it took a while, but because we were so hungry to start with! Arriving in American-diner style plastic baskets it really was street food to go. My quesadilla was completely homemade and you could tell – the chorizo meat was ground and spiced in a way that you just can’t buy in the shops. James made his way through his burrito slowly but surely; it was such good food he wanted to finish it, but so filling!

My point is, if you’re looking for a gorgeous little independent food venue in Brighton, be it birthday-Brighton or not, please go see the guys at La Choza. They’re so friendly and laid back – they deserve our custom! It was so nice to find a place that weren't in a hurry to get us out and get a new table in, or rushing us through the meal. The atmosphere here is so easy it melts any troubles away.

Sorry about the photo quality, I’m no photographer. Please check out the La Choza links below and see if you can pop in and taste that Slushie!

BarGirl Eats Out (Aka HungryGirl)

Good evening and welcome back. I hope you're enjoying your second bank holiday in less than four weeks - don't go getting excited that this is becoming the norm; BarTenders of the world can't take it.

This week, I had the absolute pleasure of attending The Hush Hush Grub Club's Friday 2nd of May Dinner; Eat Your Greens. A supper, planned around entirely vegetarian dishes by one of my close friends. You can read all about The Hush Hush Grub Club on Cassi's website - she has such a passion for working to show people that you can actually taste the difference between processed stuff that comes in boxes from the supermarket and fresh, local, organic foods. She chose, this week, to say that solely with vegetables.

I'm a meat-eater and probably always will be but there are nights when I just don't fancy meat (or can't be bothered to cook meat) so I will usually fall back on some sort of vegetarian Asian food - probably Japanese. This dinner with Cassi, some of her friends and previous Grub Club supporters really opened my eyes to how much good stuff can come of a diet designed around veggies.

A menu ranging from homemade pesto dips, salads, roulades, tarts and eventually desserts completely underlined everything the Grub Club stands for. I was blown away by the Eton Mess for dessert and my boyfriend loved his Beetroot Brownies; purely because of the difference REAL fresh fruit and veg makes.

The best meals come from the best ingredients and this dinner, hosted by Cassi at Toscanaccio's  Italian Food & Wine Bar in Parchment Street, Winchester was full of the best combinations; amazing food, completely chilled out atmosphere, beautiful decorations and really wonderful people.

Dining like this, where you buy a ticket and just see who else turns up, is big in New York and big in London - I'm really happy Cassi is bringing this to Winchester. For people who like to try new things, new foods, new places as well as meeting new people - The Hush Hush Grub Club is the place for you.

You can find The Hush Hush Grub Club along with the rest of the work Cassi is doing, on Twitter and on Facebook.

Til next time, stay safe.

Bar Girl down, I repeat; Bar Girl down.

Good evening and welcome back. I hope you had a wonderful Easter and spent time with your families (whatever shape they may be.)

For me, Easter weekend was spent working at both The WW and The BB. 38 hours in total, I think it ended up being. 38 hours between Friday evening and Sunday night - safe to say I was exhausted. Easter Monday and my parents came to visit us; My mum and Stepdad, from Kent. The day was nice; it was sunny on the whole and there was a really cute vintage market on in the High Street.
Tuesday, I gave blood. Just over a pint of my juicy red stuff to someone who needs it.

What I'm trying to say is, I over exerted myself over the Easter period and now I'm paying for it. I'm sick. Really sick. I'm sure it's just a cold but it's horrible. I don't often get sick so when I do it feels 10 x worse. Runny nose, runny eyes, puffy face... I've lost all taste/smell sensations and I sound like a backed up drain when I cough my throat raw. If what they say is true, the proverbial they that is, that it takes seven days to get over a cold, then I'm on my fifth day. Two more to go, then hopefully I'll be ready to work the weekend again. I've got a Thursday shift to get through first, too. I will not be calling in sick. I do not call in sick. Mainly because I hate it when other people do; inconsiderate, unthinking, annoying...

Still now things will start calming down again. I'm only working at the BB now, so no more WW for me (Thank God) but I'm sure I will still be waxing (not so) nostalgic about horrible customers and hypercritical hypocritical staff for a while yet.   Bitter? Me? But of course not.

For now, I'll leave you with this quote that made me smile this week. Not sure where it came from, but I like it nevertheless.
"Bitter bar tenders aren't born - they're made."

Til next time, stay safe.
